Evaluation 1-Aleena
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Used forms and Conventions- In a typical thriller film the girl is the protagonist and the male is the antagonist,we followed this typical convention just like in the film Silence of the Lambs and No Mutual Friends and we used typical Binary opposites such as male vs female, crime vs good and upper vs lower class. We also followed the proairetic enigma code and is the code which builds tension and suggests something will happen,we used this when there was the line of items lined up.Similarly in Argo there are riots with people chanting and burning the american flag, this scene also implies something bad will happen just like in our film opening.

Developed forms and Conventions-In No mutual friends we developed forms and conventions because at the start of a film you are usually introduced to all the main characters straight away however we have not introduced one of our main characters, which is the police investigator so this leaves us to wonder who he is and we did not formally introduce one of the main characters,Jacob because for the first 3/4 of our opening sequence you don't see his face.In the film se7en we are introduced to the 2 main characters played by Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman during the opening of the film we are introduced to detective David Mills.

Challenged forms and Conventions-Unlike generic thriller films we decided to create the climax of our thriller at middle to end rather than beginning to middle, as usually the situation is resolved at the end of the film, whereas our overall plot indicates that the killer is still out there despite the polices best efforts in the investigation of the serial killings. Also in the end of our 2 minute opening, we show the knife being raised to indicate some sort of violence later on, however in the beginning it is not seen and is only suggested.  A film which is unlike our opening is Seven Pounds, which shows Will Smith committing suicide in the beginning, and then shows the events leading up to it in the middle to end , this is violent to begin with and goes straight into it unlike our thriller film which leads up to violence and crime. Also unlike Taken, the murderer is not at the end whereas in Taken a thriller film the kidnapper is found.

Evaluation 3-Aleena Munir
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Our film is a niche film which targets only small numbers of people with particular interests and will be distributed in art house cinemas so we will have low cost marketing and distribution of our media product which is partly discussed in a post on our blog. (nfgssteel.blogspot.com).Our film uses the theme of social media throughout the film so it would be good to market the film online because the majority of our target audience will be online and will relate to the use of social media in their own lives.

For this film we will use horizontal integration for the production, distribution and exhibition and we will be the production company and we will distribute the product as this is only marketing on a small scale, marketing and distributing our own product will mean that we will get our own profit and won't have to share it with other people if we synergise. However because this is a potentially a popular niche film we may decide to ask another small local cinema to advertise our film around the area or we would likely ,if we were going to synergise, with Film4 for distribution and exhibition as they also produce niche films such as A Field In England which similarly to ours uses black and white throughout the film(Link to Film4-http://www.film4.com/).Our film would be released partly to show the dangers of online social media and it would be released to entertain the person watching and persuade them to buy the DVD and by word of mouth promote the film. There is potential for merchandising such as a book based on the film,DVD'S,action figures,T shirts and games about the movie. There is potential for a sequel about the man when he escapes or leaves prison once he gets caught or there could be spin offs, but a spin off is very unlikely, this would therefore if it were to happen get our company more press and profit if the sequel were to go well.

In conclusion production would be done by us,however for marketing and distribution we may synergise with a bigger company such as Film4 to get a bigger audience for our film and as Film 4 produces and distributes lots of genres of films we would fit right in with our own film,"No Mutual Friends".

Evaluation 4-Aleena Munir

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for  our media product would be around the age of 15- 30, as we decided that we would target young people because from our audience research and online statistics we found that people in this age group use social media more, as they are the age group that are starting sixth form and are finishing sixth form and going to University and finishing Uni. We also chose to do to the age of 30 as this is the age usually where people start to have children,  and are active social media users at this age.

We are targeting both women and men, as both are effected by the dangerous side to social media, and from research it shows that both boys and girls can be victims to social media predators. Our audience are active internet users, who use social media such as Facebook, twitter, Instagram etc they are in education, and are social with friends inside and outside sixth form/ university, or they are young parents who still use social media to keep in contact with their friends. However the older ages about 25-30 can less relate to being a social media victim or putting themselves in that kind of danger as they are older and less at risk to be targeted. Even so they could relate as they could have younger siblings and be watching for the sake of their children, or young people that they know.
Our audience would have interests and pastimes such as clubbing, reading, working on projects, sports, events, school work, and social media. The characters in our thriller film also have similar interests as the
victim is a young person of about 18 years old so the audience watching can relate to what she does.
The things that they would spend their money on would be things such as new technology such as Iphones, computers, laptops, and new apps. Both of the characters in the our media film own Iphones, showing something the audience can relate to.

They would have personal beliefs such a religion but would also believe in things such as education, and getting a good job, or moving up in there apprenticeship and finishing their degree, and having many aspirations that they would want to complete in their lives as they are just starting out and figuring where they want to go from there.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

When constructing our media product, which is a 2 minute long Thriller film, I have learnt how to use constructively several different media technologies.
Camera-Finepix S2950

Finepix S2950
The main technology I used during the film making process was camera equipment and  the Camera which  I used was a Finepix S2950, I used the same camera to film all the scenes in our thriller film, and for some shots I used a tripod which was a KONIG KN-LS10.
The Finepix S2950 had zooming in capabilities while filming, and also had monaural sound where all the audio signals are mixed up together through a signal routing channel unlike a stereophonic sound system. Zooming capabilities were a strength within the camera as it allowed us to close up on certain scenes and focus on a certain part of the scene,  which would be more difficult without this quality as I would have to keep moving the camera,  and be unable to have steady shots as I would have to hold the camera to be able to zoom in, as it would be difficult to maintain the position on the tripod. A weakness of the Finepix S2950 is that it was very slow to focus, and you could secure the camera to the tripod find the perfect angle and find out that it would not focus, and the scene was very blurry therefore you would have to move the camera closer and change the angle of the camera to be able to focus it.
However the camera picked up sound very easily, which was a good quality on the camera although we did not use filmed sound during our thriller film, it picked up background noise very well, which added some atmosphere to our scenes, but most background noise was edited out and music put in its place.
Another weakness of the camera which we experienced during filming was that it needed constant battery
change , and the battery drained very quickly, and as the camera was not chargeable it took away filming time when the camera suddenly died out when shooting.  The camera has a lot more functions when taking photographs such as filters, red eye removal, cropping, landscape, portrait, zoom brackets etc, which were good when we took photos of our media equipment where as in the filming department it has very limited functions to improve the quality of film. While filming we used the KONIG KN-LS10 tripod, and it proved efficient  however it was difficult to move the tripod to different heights and was hard to strap the camera to it straight without it being wonky meaning it had to held during filming.

Blogger

 Blogger

The other technology I used was blogger to post our media posts regarding our thriller film, including individual posts, evaluations, group posts, videos and images. I had never used blogger before so it was new experience for me, and I had to work out how to create and save new posts which was easy and efficient enough, changing font and colours was very similar to Microsoft Word. However what was more difficult about starting our blog was working out the layout and color scheme, and how to do it on blogger. To do this you go to Design and layout in the settings menu and chose the layout for the blog. Blogger was quite easy to learn to use quickly, after testing it out and using different icons to do different things.  We chose black and grey as our colour scheme as we thought it went with our Thriller task theme.
However blogger could often run quite slow, and had difficulties saving certain posts , and some work had to be redone because of this. Also uploading our preliminary task onto blogger proved very difficult as the file wouldn't upload no matter how many times we tried. Our blog  http://nfgssteel.blogspot.com/
Final Cut pro

Final Cut Pro-  The programme we used to edit and create our thriller film is Final Cut Pro we also used it to edit our preliminary as well. Final Cut Pro proved very difficult to use compared to movie maker, and there was little online instruction to help us so it was up to us to explore Final Cut pro and work out how to edit the clips, which proved difficult as we had  limited time. The first thing we did was find the clips, which took some time, and then ordered them on the timeline. While watching them, we realized some shots were very shaky so we decided to re film, and then re upload those clips another time consuming process.

We rendered each clip as we went along which saved having to do a very long time consuming process at the end. Then we cropped each clip which was easy enough. The next step was to add filters to certain scenes particularly the scenes with the killer. This was difficult, as when we tried the filter would not work, effects proved difficult to do as well as editing unwanted background sound, and speeding up our clips as they proved slow and too long. Eventually after experimenting and asking help from various people we managed to get the results we wanted. We could not work out how to do backgrounds with text so we resulted to filming any text we wanted in our film.

Evaluation 4-Hannah West
Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience will be in there 15 to 20's and might be both genders as females might relate to the female victim but male audience members are the typical audience members for thrillers and  they may be interested by the crime and what will happen to the girl. They would probably be working or middle class as they are more likely to spend time on social media sites and they probably spend a lot of money on new technology such as phones or tablets/laptops.The older part of our specified audience might have children and it is possible that a very small niche of people in there early 30's would watch the film. The people who have children would watch the film so they could be educated about the potential dangers of social media so they can warn their children about the dangers that are highlighted in the film, as well as watching a entertaining film in the process. The audiences believes would be obvious- they would believe that it would be obvious that you shouldn't meet up with someone you don't know on your own but as the antagonist as a girl of 16/17 it would be believable that this situation could happen to a younger naive person. The audience would enjoy more realistic films such as psycho and some of the audience are very likely to be fans of the show catfish which is about a person who is speaking to someone online and the person they want to meet up with won't meet up,this is often because they are hiding something. They may also be intersted in films and gaming.

Evaluation 5-Hannah West
How did you attract/address your audience?

Evaluation 6-Hannah West
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

During the process of making our media product we used different technologies such as...

Camera-Finepix S2950-We used a Finepix S2950 camera to film our media product as this was a more well known camera to me as it's my personal camera. The camera has 30 frames a second which is good for fast paced thriller films so you don't miss any of the action.Another advantage of the camera is the zoom whilst filming function which helped us frame the shot better (For Example, frame around Jacob's face). However a disadvantage was the use of batteries which meant sometimes shots were interrupted by the camera dying and the batteries having to be changed.Another issue was the focus when you pressed the shutter button because sometimes the focus was blurred once the shot began so we had to re-film however our main advantage was that unlike our school cameras there was no way we could lose the shots because I could take the camera home and make copies of all the clips and we didn't have to check the camera wasn't being used by another group.

Tripod- KONIG kn-LS10- We used this to steady some of our shots such as on the Facebook pages .This product had rubber grips on the bottom so this enabled our shots to stay still. This was easy to use.

blogger-I used the online blogging system "blogger" to present the planning, research and marketing/finished piece for our film, http://nfgssteel.blogspot.com/.To make a post I pressed "new post" to create a new post then named it on the bar above appropriately to the content of the post.To acknowledge who's work it was (mine or Aleena's) and the category that the post fall under we added "tags".To add media products such as videos or pictures we pressed on their icons and added a URL of the picture/video of uploaded it onto the blog.To add captions to the pictures we selected the photo then on the toolbar we press "caption" and write what we want.To put the post onto the blog we pressed publish but we had the ability to "save" the post and then leave the page and go back to edit and "publish" it later. This to begin with was mostly easy and once we'd done it once it was fine however we used things such as layout and template to change the appearance of our blog and we found this a little more difficult to use as on somethings such as layout there were terms such as favicons which I'd never heard of.
Me making this blogger post- you can see the different things such as title, labels, publish and save buttons

illustrator- The next piece of software I used was Adobe Illustrator to create our company ident. To create the ident we pressed "new" and changed the size to 5x8 cm.I then used the "rectangle tool" to go around the edge of my chosen measurements and used a grey colour to create a background. As we had no text that matched the text that we designed I decided to draw the text myself so it will match the style that we wanted.I used the "line" tool to create two lines which my text will stay between then I used the "paintbrush tool" to start drawing the curves and edges of my font.To get an exact copy of the letter "e" on our ident I used the "lasso" tool to select the first "e" letter I made then I copied it them "pasted" it then placed it where it was needed. To fill in the part of the ident which was half black I used "paintbrush" and "rectangle" tool and the ident was done. I then went file and "export" and changed the file type to a JPEG image. This software in general I found easy to use as I am fairly familiar with Adobe software as it is and it was a basic thing to draw so it didn't need an expert user to create what I needed.

Youtube- We created our account and I created our channel and we called it Steel group media NFGS. We added a channel description and we knew how to upload everything we needed to easily however we couldn't add any cover art  as our ident was either to small for this so we decided not to have any cover art.I found YouTube easy to use although sometimes uploading our footage was slow which slowed down how quickly we got things done.

final cut pro- I used this to edit our final piece and preliminary task. When we were first introduced to the program I found it very difficult to use.Firstly I uploaded the clips which we selected were the best when filming.I then selected each clip in order and put them onto the onto the timeline, this part was simple. But other things such as cutting some of the clips, adding effects (For example, the black and white filter on Jacobs clips, cropping one shot(For example, shot of Jacob picking up the phone and putting it in his pocket)speeding up some of our clips(For example, our credits were sped up to 130%) and getting rid of the sound on our main clips I  found this more difficult and had to ask for help or I experimented with the clips until I got the result I wanted.

movie maker- To animate the ident I used movie maker as this is a quick and easy program to use.I uploaded the pictures of the idents then pressed "animation" and picked a fade transition between the 2 pictures which changes the colour of our ident from black to red.

Main login page on prezi-showing my prezi and "new prezi" button
Prezi- Is online presentation software and I used this to make some of my evaluations.I set up our group account and pressed make "new prezi"and selected a template and I typed the title and text into the different paths and I added others if I needed more space for text.Overall this software was easy to use as it was similar to power point and had instructions on user buttons so you always knew what to do.

Evaluation 7- Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? Hannah West

The riots in this clip could suggest something will happen  to the people in the riots and at the end of the clip the man jumps over the gate then the clip stops, this builds tension and makes us wonder what will happen to the man now he has crossed onto the other side of the gate.
The semantic code
The main issue in this media text is rich vs poor but it may represent other issues such as a loss of lives as shown by the wall of pictures so a want for revenge and they might not also want to have democracy in their country

Actors and Actresses in our Thriller Opening

Character Profiles and How we will represent them in our film opening

ISABELLE SMITH - ALICIA JONES

Alicia Jones plays  the victim in our Thriller film, she is the young girl who is wrongly mislead by an online predator. She is the protagonist, and portrays an average eighteen year old girl, who is attractive and friendly and very social with lots of friends on social networking sites. She is vulnerable and falls in love with the "boy" and desperately like most girls wants someone to love her. She is quite outgoing and has a big personality, and is used to talking to people online. She is a girly girl, and we showed this by showing close up of candles and small details such as her wearing a dress. She has been brought up by middle class parents, and is an only child this is not really shown in the opening but it is sort of realized because of her surroundings.

ANDREW DRAPER - JACOB FRANCIS

Jacob Francis is the name of the fake profile the antagonist online predator/stalker uses to stalk and end up killing young victim Alicia Jones. Jacob Francis appears to be a young teenage boy, who is innocent in talking to Alicia as he seems attracted to her. But actually Jacob Francis is an insane, mentally disturbed man who preys on young girls, and stalks them building relationships with them before killing them. He is quite the opposite of masculine very thin and tall and gaunt, but has an oddly powerful and scary air about himself, and although his motive is not shown in the film it is kind of insinuated, as he is shown to have a odd behavior, and then his character is portrayed as violent as he picks up a knife from the table and puts it in his pocket, but he is not shown using it in the opening.  His age is not shown in the clip, but the way he behaves implies he is a lot older than he says he is and is actually a middle aged man. Jacob Francis shows some kind of weird obsession towards his victims, as he is shown stroking their photographs, and as he has always seen online in our opening in very dark rooms, and seems to be very solitary, and he a more tension building character because his face remains hidden preserving his identity until the end of the opening.

Promotional Material

DVD box cover

Promotional Material

We will create a poster for promotional material for our film which will be distributed to cinemas and a DVD cover for our film.

Dvd - This is the DVD which we will sell and distribute to the audience that wishes to buy the film, the cover of the DVD will be the same as the poster for distribution although the release date will not be on there and it will be replaced by reviews to promote the potential buyer into buying the product, .We used  traditional Facebook colours.

Poster- Again I used the traditional Facebook colours and I used snip its from the opening of our film but I did not show the antagonists face because this will get the audience of the poster asking questions and make them interested in the film. The tag line "Are you 100% sure you know who you're talking to?" was used to make suggestions to the audience about the plot and it might make some of the viewers of the poster think about their own lives and their privacy settings on Facebook also.We then featured the release date to make the poster look more realistic as I found this was a common item on most film posters.

Changes in our StoryBoard

Changes in our StoryBoard

Our Final storyboard
1. the first shot will be a blank black page which will have the date 1st January typed onto it with an elipsis. This will fade into...(this stayed the same)
2.The next shot is a side view of hands typing on a keyboard. The setting will be low key with very few details around the computer so it makes the character look suspicious(This stayed the same)
3.To the Facebook page with the credits on it.(This stayed in the same order however we decided to make this from her point of view as if it was from her eyes so naturally your head and eyes move a little  like they do in our shot)
4. Low angle shot of girl adjusting her dress(This stayed the same)
5.Mid shot of back of character wearing hoody in low key lighting(We changed the order of this so that our there was a faster cutting rate which will create better suspense for the opening of our of thriller)
6.High angle shot of man moving the mouse(This is in the same place)
7.View from mans computer adding Alicia as a friend(This is in the same place but to distinguish the difference in scenes of Alicia and Jacob we used a Black and white filter on Jacobs scenes)
8.Close up of Alicia's items with arc shot to her on the computer(In this shot an arc to her looking at the computer was used was added)
9.Alicia's view accepting him as a friends(This stayed the same)
10. Mans view saying "hi" to Alicia(This was intended to be a split screen between the 2 characters however we thought we should focus on Jacob starting the conversation so we present him as clearly following her and have him as the dominant character)

We got rid of the shot of jacob stroking the computer screen and the arc shot of jacob because the arc shot was to unsteady to film whilst moving with our equipment and we felt the stroking of the computer screen wasn't needed to establishing in our narrative that Jacob is a weird character.

11.Over the shoulder shot of Alicia looking at the computer(This stayed the same although in our original storyboard we had this shot then the over the shoulder shot of Jacob but we felt this wasn't needed where we placed it so putting it here shows the audience that Alicia has received the message)
12.Date in Facebook font (This stayed the same
13.Alicia's view of conversation between 2 characters(This was also going to be split screen but was to time consuming for the split screen so in editing we sped up the conversation)
14.Date in Facebook font(Stayed the same)
15.Conversation asking if Alicia wants to meet Jacob(This still happened although there was no superimposition)
16. Aerial view of line of 3 items(This stayed the same)
17.Close up side view of phone being put into pocket(This shot was the same apart from the prop was a  phone instead of a printed picture)
18.High angle over the shoulder shot of man looking at phone(This shot was the same apart from the prop was a  phone instead of a printed picture)
19.Side view of Jacob putting on the gloves(This shot was the same)
20.Wide view of Jacob turning around with action coming to the camera and he's holding the knife(This stayed the same)
21.Title of the film fades in(this was the same although our title idea changed)
