How is the atmosphere created?what are themes brought up in the clip and how is tone/mood created?
Mise en scene-
Costume-In the clip the the woman is seen wearing a tracksuit which creates the tone of.However later in the clip many of the men in the office are wearing suits and ties, this suggests a formal/serious atmosphere for the audience.
Props/setting-The use of smoke in the middle of the forest in the clip may create a nervous tone for the audience and create a sense of danger because you would never ordinarily see smoke in a forest so this makes the audience anxious. The use of setting in a forest with trees and no buildings in sight makes the audience feel nervous for the character because she appears to be isolated from everyone.
Lighting- At the start of the clip,low key lighting is used and this creates the mood of gloom
Actor movement is also used in the clip,for example when Clarice,the main character is walking to an office she exchanges another high five with another woman who we assume is a friend, this creates a lighthearted,friendly mood for the audience.
Sound-
diegetic sound is used in the clip in the form of music at the start of the clip.The music gradually increases pace a little and builds tension and makes the scene more creepy and intense.The music in this clip also is re-introduced when Clarice sees the disturbing photographs of the people who were murdered,this also makes the mood more creepy and frightening.
non-diegetic sound is also used at the start of the running scene in the forest using the use of birds crowing,this makes the audience feel scared and creates a chilling tone as we often assume a horror film clique to be some sort of bird as it represents isolation and seclusion so the opening may also be a little misleading about it's genre.
Dialogue is also used in the clip and in the clip Clarice addresses the man who asked her to meet someone in their office with "yes sir",this implies a strict and serious mood and work environment.Dialogue is also used later when after the man asked Clarice to meet Hannibal and he says "don't give him any personal details" in a stern tone of voice, this suggests to the audience that this is a warning about this dangerous person which puts across a serious tone to the audience.
Camera-
Firstly,an establishing shot of the forest is used at the start of the clip which creates the tone of danger because often a stereotypical horror film is set in an isolated area.Later in the clip a over the shoulder shot was used during the conversation between the girl and a professor,This creates a relaxed and friendly atmosphere because there is clear eye contact.
A reaction shot is also used in the clip when the girl turns to see the disturbing photographs on the wall which is shown with the use of camera and lens movement using a gradual zoom in to see the girls face.This focuses on her expression and it makes the audience uneasy.
A matched cut is used during the start of the clip when the girl is running thought the forest and it changes the angle,this exaggerates how far she has run and presents the idea that someone might be following her and makes the scene tense and the audience fell anxious.
A jump cut is also used between when the girl is in the smoke then it jumps to her running at a faster pace than before which makes the audience apprehensive as to what may have happened between these 2 moments to cause her to run and causes a sense of potential peril.
