U (universal)-All ages are permitted to watch films with this certification. There is no bad language with very mild violence and no sexual content and according to the British board of film certification “U films should be set within a positive moral framework and should offer reassuring counterbalances to any violence, threat or horror.”

PG (Parental guidance)- All ages can also see this film but parents are asked to check whether they think all material in the film will be suitable to smaller or very sensitive children. There is mild bad language only; moderate violence with no detail and frightening sequences shouldn’t be prolonged. This certification of film should also have moral high ground to counterbalance any bad actions in the film.

12A/12- Can only be viewed by people over 12. 12A is only used in the cinema and people under 12 can view the film if they are accompanied with an adult over 18.The 12 certification is for home media. Moderate violence is allowed but with no detail on injuries or blood, things that could harm someone if it were to be imitated by the audience must not be glamorised and moderate psychological and physical threat may be permitted but they cannot last for a long period of time.

15- Only people over 15 can watch this. There may be use of strong language and violence can be strong but cannot show lots of detail of how the violence occurred, threats are also allowed.

18-Only people over 18 can watch these films. Very strong violence and language is allowed however it may have to cut if there are extreme details of dangerous or harmful acts that could risk harm to individuals or society. The film should not reduce morals or the audience.
